White British is an ethnic classification used in the United Kingdom Census 2001, 92.1 percent of the population and 54,153,898 people in the United Kingdom described themselves as White in the census.[1] The largest group to mark the "Other White" category were born in western Europe. The UK was the largest single country of birth for "Other White" followed by the U.S.A (7 per cent), Italy (6 per cent), Germany (6 per cent) and France (5 per cent). The main Eastern European countries of birth were Turkey (3 per cent) and Poland (3 per cent). Since the census is based on self described ethnicity rather than race, people of recent Near Eastern origin may choose to claim that they are "Other White" or "Other Ethnic Group",[2] although people of Middle Eastern ancestry are not generally percieved as "White" in the UK.[3] In the UK, recent immigrants from the Middle East, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Iraq and Iran are not generally viewed as "White" and have at times been discriminated against.[4] The term "White" as used in the UK is generally used to identify Europeans. It is believed that the indigenous people of the British Isles are direct descendants of Iberians who crossed the Bay of Biscay almost 6,000 years ago.[12] These conclusions have been recently corroborated by several authors, studies and books like Blood of the Isles, by Brian Sykes, Origins of Britons, by Stephen Oppenheimer and Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project, by Spencer Wells, indicating an ancient relationship among the peoples of Atlantic Europe.
