White Deer is a town located in Carson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,060.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,060 people, 425 households, and 311 families residing in the town. The population density is 235.2/km² (608.0/mi²). There are 490 housing units at an average density of 108.7/km² (281.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.32% White, 0.00% African American, 0.85% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.79% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 5.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 425 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the town the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $36,953, and the median income for a family is $41,793. Males have a median income of $32,500 versus $22,841 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,938. 6.4% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

White Deer rapidly grew as a supply town for settlers and by 1910 had a population estimated at fifty.
White Deer's ethnic diversity was heightened in 1909, when Henry Czerner and Ben Urbanczyk established a community of Polish farmers from Central Texas at the northeast edge of town.
White Deer suffered a disastrous fire in 1931, and tornadoes struck in 1947 and 1951.
