White Oak is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area located in Montgomery County, Maryland.

As an unincorporated area, White Oak's boundaries are not officially defined. White Oak is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°2'32" North, 76°59'18" West (39.042109, -76.988273)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²). 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,973 people, 7,921 households, and 5,251 families residing in the area. The population density is 1,626.0/km² (4,212.1/mi²). There are 8,139 housing units at an average density of 631.0/km² (1,634.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 40.57% White, 37.05% African American, 0.33% Native American, 11.18% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 6.54% from other races, and 4.22% from two or more races. 12.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,921 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.17.


In the area, the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.


The median income for a household in the area is $54,276, and the median income for a family is $65,590. Males have a median income of $41,487 versus $35,598 for females. The per capita income for the area is $25,893. 7.7% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The White oak is fairly tolerant of a variety of habitats, and may be found on ridges, in valleys, and in between, and in dry and moist habitats, and in moderately acid and alkaline soils.
One of the most famous White Oaks in America is the Charter Oak of Hartford, Connecticut, the subject of a legend nearly as old as the colony itself.
The Wye Oak, probably the oldest living White oak until it was felled by a storm in 2002, was the state tree of Maryland.
