White Pine County is a county located in the state of Nevada. As of 2000, the population is 9,181. Its county seat is Ely6. It is the home of Great Basin National Park.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 23,042 km˛ (8,897 mi˛). 22,989 km˛ (8,876 mi˛) of it is land and 53 km˛ (21 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,181 people, 3,282 households, and 2,159 families residing in the county. The population density is 0.40/km˛ (1.0/mi˛). There are 4,439 housing units at an average density of 0.19/km˛ (0.50/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 86.35% White, 4.14% Black or African American, 3.29% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 3.09% from other races, and 2.10% from two or more races. 10.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,282 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% are non-families. 29.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 128.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 138.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $36,688, and the median income for a family is $44,136. Males have a median income of $36,083 versus $26,425 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,309. 11.00% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.80% of those under the age of 18 and 7.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
