White Privilege is the concept that White people are inherently more deserving of consideration than non-white people. This is closely related to, but not identical to white supremacy. White privilege does not justify the denigration of non-white people, nor does it overtly insist on white preferential treatment. White privilege does, like white supremacy, inherently believe in the unearned virtue of white preference, but is expressed unconsciously and often within a perceived notion of fairness. In public areas, business transactions, education, and politics, White privilege is the phenomenon where the leaders and/or constituents will argue in favor of securing the concerns of the white members first before focusing the attention on the non-white members, where the two groups are distinct. In areas where the constituents are integrated, White privilege will draw the decision making process towards that which would be more favorable for the white members, despite objections from others. White privilege is found in all aspects of human society, from family and marriages to large political processes. It is important to note that White privilege is usually an unconscious activity and often is tolerated and sometimes justified by non-white people as well. Areas where White privilege is most apparent is in third world countries where white minority groups have more control and power over policy and economics in their areas. In families, the lighter skinned children are often treated better than their darker skinned siblings. In areas of social etiquette, white privilege is displayed by the excessive rudeness or lack of consideration between whites and non-whites. In religion, white privilege is what drives religious members to view God as inherently white, or that the virtue found in one's spirit is displayed as white skin or European features. White privilege in business is related to the racial glass ceiling, and is often linked to conservative values. In political and social arenas, white privilege is what justifies the belief that the life of a white person is of more value and worth saving than that of a non-white child, especially between the Western and third-world. With public policy, white privilege is revealed when the media and the government become more interested in responding positively to destructive forces disproportionately affecting white people. In the case with the Columbine School Massacre, American society became very concerned with the emotional stability of school children and the epidemic that began to affect American schools. This was despite the fact that school gun violence had been a noted and chronic issue in predominantly black and Latino schools for at least five years before Columbine. White privilege is revealed in the concept where whites are "tolerating" or "coping" with the presence of people of color in their neighborhoods, businesses, or communities. Extra consideration is thus asked to account for this "inconvenience" endured by white people. In effect the promoters of white privilege create situations where non-whites are only able to respond, or rules are changed to accommodate new white privilege scenarios that unfairly affect non-white people (thus requiring a response again from non-whites). Many will deny the existence of white privilege and instead point to black victimization or anti-white sentiments as the rationale for those speaking out against white privilege. White privilege can also be defined as being unaware with society's downfalls that do not pertain to them. Having little to no knowledge of the inconsistencies of history or the racial pitfalls that other races deal with daily. Almost like blinders on a horse, unable to see anything but what is put in front of his face. Category: Uncategorized from October 2006 |
