Whitey Herzog (born November 9, 1931) is a former major leaguebaseball player and manager. He was born Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog in New Athens, Illinois.
In eight seasons, Herzog batted .254 with 25 homeruns, 172 RBI, 213 runs, 60 doubles, 20 triples, and 13 stolen bases in 634 games.
Herzog started his managerial career with the Texas Rangers (1973), following with California Angels (1974), Kansas City Royals(1975-79) and St. Louis Cardinals (1980-90). He led six division winners, three pennant winners, and won the 1982World Series with St. Louis, compiling a 1281-1125 career record.
WhiteyHerzog won three pennants and a World Series title with the Cardinals, but he hasn't managed since 1990.
Herzog is very much alive and kicking at nearly 75, and judging by the short phone conversation he dominated on Thursday, he is as sharp and ready as ever to manage a big league team.
Herzog said he received "five of six offers'' the first 10 years after being replaced as Cardinals manager in 1990 by Red Schoendienst and eventually Joe Torre (Herzog accepted one, to run the Angels' front office) but not one offer in the last three or four.
