Wickham, formerly spelled Wykeham, is a civil parish and small market town in Hampshire, southern England, about three miles north of Fareham, and part of the City of Winchester local government district. It was the birthplace of William of Wykeham, founder of Winchester College and New College, Oxford. Henry Wickham was responsible for gathering 70,000 seeds from the rubber-bearing tree, Hevea brasiliensis, in the Manaus area of Brazil in 1876.
Wickham, who was at that time living and working near Santerem in the Rio Tapajos region of the upper Amazon, was already interested in Hevea, and had published some information on the tree, thus satisfying Markham that he would be a suitable person to make a collection.
In later years, Wickham himself encouraged the idea that his seeds had been loaded aboard a ship under the nose of a gunboat which "would have blown us out of the water had her commander suspected what we were doing".

At the end of 1981 Wickham and designer Gordon Coppuck announced that they were forming Spirit Racing to compete in Formula 2 in 1982 and to enter F1 with Honda engines.
In 1987 Wickham became a director and team manager of TOM'S GB and oversaw the company's programs in Group C, Group A and in the British Formula 3 Championship in which TOM'S ran drivers Damon Hill and Martin Donnelly.
In 1989 Wickham took over the running of the Footwork F3000 team and when Footwork bought Arrows in January 1990 he became a director of the F1 team.
