The Wiennerisches Diarium began, like many newspapers at that time, reporting about regional or international news. In addition it announced important births, wedding and death news about the aristocracy, and events surrounding the imperial court. In 1780 the name of the paper was changed to Wiener Zeitung (Viennese newspaper). In 1812 it became an official government newspaper and in 1857 the newspaper became publicly owned and was printed until 1997 by the Austrian State Printing Office. After the Second World War the first edition appeared again on September 21, 1945. The number of prints developed from 4,500 (in 1855) to today's estimated 24,000 copies.
