Born William Lawrence Boyd in Cambridge, Ohio, he was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He became famous as a Hollywood leading man in silent film romances, but his career began to slide by the decade's end due to public problems with alcohol and women. Reforming himself, he re-established his professional fame in the Western film genre, playing cowboy-hero Hopalong Cassidy, beginning in 1935, a role with which he was ever after indelibly associated and which films (66 in all) are still currently available on television and DVD in physically restored form.
