Cosby entered into the British Army as a cornet in 5th Dragoon Guards (Colonel Cadogan's Regiment) on the 15 April 1711, then as Captain in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Harvey' Regiment of Horse) on 24 December 1717. He became Colonel of the 18th Regiment ( Royal Irish Regiment) on 30 November 1735 and finally as Brigader General.
Cosby died in 1736 was replaced by George Clarke (Governor). He was buried in Stpaulschcem, New York.
