William J. McConnel was born in Commerce, Michigan on September 18, 1839. He moved to California to engage in mining, cattle, merchandizing, and banking. He lived in Oregon in 1862-63 taught school and then moved to Idaho in 1863. He served as a deputy US Marshall from 1865-67. Returned to Oregon for five years. On return to Idaho he was a member of the state constitutional convention in 1890. After statehood he was elected to US Senate and then elected to Governor in 1892 and then again in 1894. He was appointed to Indian Inspector by President McKinley on July 8, 1897. And served as Inspector in the Immigration Service in Moscow, ID(appointed by president Taft) Served in this position until his death. Interment in Moscow Cemetery.
