Willie Smith was an English professional snooker and billiards player.

He entered the World Billiards Championship in 1920 and then again in 1923, winning it on both occasions. Arguments with the governing body prevented him from taking part in the competition more often.

He turned to snooker for purely monetary reasons but never really took to the game. His natural talent as a billiards player still enabled him to reach the World Snooker Championship final in 1933 and 1935 where he was beaten by Joe Davis.

World Snooker Championship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1309 words)
The World Snooker Championship, currently held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, is the climax of snooker's annual calendar and the most important snooker event of the year in terms of prestige, prize money and world ranking points.
Snooker then went into a period of decline, and no tournament was held between 1958 and 1963.
Ronnie O'Sullivan is the only player to achieve the feat twice, and the only player to lose a match in the World Championship after scoring a 147 (against Marco Fu in 2003).

Willie Smith was one of the all-time greats of billiards and throughout the 1920's he was generally regarded as the best player in the World.
Smith was the first professional to play with a brass ferrule fitted to his cue, although the innovation had been known since at least the 1880's.
Smith made all his biggest breaks by a combination of top-of-the table and the type of all round play still practised by ordinary club players, albeit at a less consistent level.
