After his law studies, De Clerq became a lawyer at the Court of appeal in Ghent and a professor at Ghent University and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Although he could have had a succesfull career in law, he got into politics. WillyDeClercq: Het is een feit dat de invloed die we uitoefenen in Europa, een buitengewone invloed is, rekening houdend met onze politieke macht.Wij zijn zeer sterk in België en Nederland en Denemarken, en we zijn behoorlijk sterk in sommige andere Skandinavische landen.
WillyDeClercq: Ik zou eerst en vooral zeggen nooit het vertrouwen in het liberalisme te verliezen.We hebben problemen, we hebben een kleine crisis doorgemaakt, laat ons dat niet overdrijven maar laat ons ook niet doen alsof het niet bestaat, het is een signaal geweest dat we moeten opletten.

De vooruitgang die landen als Slovenië, Polen, Tsjechië en Hongarije hebben geboekt is indrukwekkend, niet alleen economisch, maar ook administratief, op het vlak van de rechtsbedeling en inzake democratisch functioneren.
Laten we vertrekken van het principe dat iedereen gelijke kansen krijgt, waarin de betere het ook beter doet, waarin de minder succesvolle voldoende geholpen wordt.
