Wilson County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 32,408. Its county seat is Floresville6. The county is named after James Charles Wilson.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,094 km˛ (809 mi˛). 2,090 km˛ (807 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 32,408 people, 11,038 households, and 8,830 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km˛ (40/mi˛). There are 12,110 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (15/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 81.19% White, 1.21% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 14.25% from other races, and 2.43% from two or more races. 36.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 11,038 households out of which 40.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.50% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.00% are non-families. 17.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.26.


In the county, the population is spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $40,006, and the median income for a family is $45,681. Males have a median income of $31,716 versus $23,582 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,253. 11.30% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.40% of those under the age of 18 and 15.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
