Winchester is a town located in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,144.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 143.8 km² (55.5 mi²). 142.3 km² (54.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.06% water.


Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,144 people, 1,557 households, and 1,094 families residing in the town. The population density is 29.1/km² (75.4/mi²). There are 1,741 housing units at an average density of 12.2 persons/km² (31.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.37% White, 0.31% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,557 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 29.7% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.4 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $37,364, and the median income for a family is $43,393. Males have a median income of $30,399 versus $20,682 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,012. 12.0% of the population and 10.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.6% are under the age of 18 and 5.8% are 65 or older.
