Encyclopedia > Wincobank

Wincobank is a suburb of Sheffield, England. It is located in the east end of the city, next to the Meadowhall shopping centre and the M1 motorway.

An Iron Age hill fort was constructed at Wincobank. The ramparts of this fort stood on the summit of a steep hill above the River Don. It was built by the Celtic Brigantes tribe in the 1st century AD, possibly to withstand the northward advance of the Roman legions.

Wincobank is home to St Thomas Boxing school which has produced some of Britain's best boxers of recent years including Naseem Hamed, Herol 'Bomber' Graham and Johnny Nelson.

These Celtic Wincobankers lived in a wetter, cooler climate than ours and they had to defend themselves against the brown bear, wolf, lynx, and wild cat, while the golden eagle hovered and swooped.
This Wincobank hill- fort, remains of which may still be seen today, had in its initial stage a single rampart, in appearance like a three-metre-high dry stone wall, rubble filled and about a metre and a half thick, on top of which was a pallisade of stakes.
The Duke of Norfolk presented Wincobank fort to Sheffield earlier this century and the site is now under the protection of the Department of the Environment as a monument of national importance.
