Windham Hill was originally a folk musiclabel, releasing Ackerman's own work, as well as that of other guitarists. It then expanded to include electronic and world music ensembles. The label is best known for its high sound quality, groundbreaking music and tasteful album art.
The label's records were distributed by A&M Records until 1989, when PolyGram purchased A&M Records. Since then they have been distributed via BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group), a division of Bertelsmann AG. Ackerman sold half of the company to Bertelsmann AG in 1992 and the rest in 1996. Windham Hill is now one of some 200 labels owned by Bertelsmann AG through BMG.
WindhamHill, starting in 1976, released a collection of records over the next 15 years that is unmatched in quality by any other record label.
WindhamHill records was started in Palo Alto, California in 1976 as a way for Will to record his first collection of original songs for acoustic guitar.
WindhamHill was bought by a major label, the offices in Palo Alto were closed and everything moved down to Los Angeles.
