Encyclopedia > Windows Display Driver Model

Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) is the new graphic driver model for video cards running under Windows Vista. Windows XP loading drivers during a Safe Mode bootup A device driver, or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a computer hardware device. ... A video card, (also referred to as a graphics accelerator card, display adapter, graphics card, and numerous other terms), is an item of personal computer hardware whose function is to generate and output images to a display. ... Windows Vista is a line of graphical operating systems used on personal computers, including home and business desktops, notebook computers, Tablet PCs, and media centers. ...

According to Microsoft:

"The Windows Vista desktop is being drawn in a completely different way from all previous versions. Every window will have its own, full window-sized surface to draw to. The desktop will be dynamically composed many times a second from the contents of each window. The goal for desktop composition is to enable compelling new visual effects for both the Windows user interface and for applications created by third-party developers, all shown on increasingly affordable, high-density displays.
To achieve this enhanced desktop experience, a new display driver model has been designed to radically advance functionality, stability, and reliability. Coupled with acceleration provided by current and future graphics hardware, this new graphics driver model enables Windows Vista to deliver a higher level of performance and quality, and a new desktop experience."[1]

Windows Vista includes WDDM Version 1.0.

At WinHEC 2006, Microsoft talked about how it was planning a major change to WDDM to allow for better scheduling of tasks (multitasking) on GPUs. WDDM 1.0 only allows rudimentary task scheduling. The upcoming WDDM 2.0, on which Microsoft has not put an introduction date, will require a new generation of GPUs.[2] The Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) is the annual conference where Microsoft sets out its hardware plans for Microsoft Windows-compatible PCs. ... Multitasking may refer to any of the following: Computer multitasking - the apparent simultaneous performance of two or more tasks by a computers central processing unit. ... GeForce 6600GT (NV43) GPU Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) GPU Intel GMA X3000 IGP “GPU” redirects here. ...

Limitation

The older model, Windows XP Display Driver Model (XPDM), still works in Vista via the legacy graphics stack. However, WDDM drivers do not support "heterogeneous multi-adapter" multi-monitor implementations. All graphics adapters in the system must use the same display driver model, either XPDM only or WDDM only, but not both at the same time. In addition, if multiple graphics adapters are present in the system, all of them must use the same WDDM driver; if two adapters have different WDDM drivers, Vista will disable one of them.[3]
