"Know what you eat" is one of the most important recommendations which are given.

The wine label is for the consumer an important source of information. The wine producer considers the label as a sale element. More and more the emphasis lies on creating a certain atmosphere around the wine. The promotional aspect on labels gets more and more a chance by the technical renewals on print- and packing area.

Indications on the wine label

The wine classification system is different from country to country and is not the same everywhere in the world. There are countries where the classification is made by region and area. In some countries it is for example only necessary to indicate from which year a certain wine is.

Already a considerable time the EU - and the Belgian regulation imposes a vast labelling is introduced which is restricted to simple but important information. If each member state follows the rules, he is free to use his own classification system.

According to this regulation there must be at least next standings on the label :

  • which type of wine (for example vin de pays, table wine, AOC),
  • the name and address of the wine producer, bottler or salesman,
  • the name of the country of origin,
  • the contents (the quantity without packing, for example 75 cl),
  • the alcohol volume grade for spirits with a grade higher than 1.2%. The mentioned alcohol volume grade can deviate at most 0.5 percent from the real grade. Each indication of the alcohol grade differently expressed than in volume percent has been prohibited.

The additional information is left to the wine producer himself. The most usual supplementary data can be:

  • besides the type of wine they can mention also: ' brut ', ' demi-sec '...
  • the vintage year,
  • the used grape variety, depending on the fact if the grape type is determinative for the type of wine,
  • the name of those who are involved at the trade, for example selected by.... (Sélectionné par....), imported by....(Importé par....),
  • medals or other prices which are granted to the wine,
  • recommendations for the use (for example chilly serve).

The obligation of the indication of the minimum durability date is not obliged for wine, liquor wine and fruit wine. Vintage near Sorrento, Italy, Jacob Philipp Hackert, c. ... Collecting wine labels

Collecting wine labels is for some people a hobby.

On wine labels a lot of different images can be found. Examples of this are: animals, architecture, art, cars, costumes, dance, first names, flowers, glass windows, head-gears, lighthouses, owls, religion, trains and turtles.

By grouping the wine labels this way, you obtain a collection of thematic wine labels.

Wine labels can also be collected by country or region, like for example Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and South Africa.

Consumerism | Wine Label Basics (2980 words)
There are collectors of wine labels who don't consume wine and consumers of wine who base their purchases entirely on the appeal of the labels.
Conversely, U.S. wines that are exported to Europe may sometimes be required to cover up or obliterate the alcohol warning statement (which many worldly wine drinkers think is ludicrous, anyway, and prompts them to question the general American mental capacity).
Wines tend to oxidize more slowly and age better in larger bottles, so although there are no guarantees, big bottles are preferable to small in old wines.
MadeiraWineGuide: Madeira Wine Labels (1840 words)
The aristocratic and upper class was well established, the drinking habits for rather heavy wines that needed to be decanted, the high quality of silver manufacturing and last but not least the naval connection to overseas served the growing need for wine labels.
These labels were made from all kinds of materials and they were made in every period, especially from 1735 to 1860 (when it became legal to sell wine in single bottles in the UK) but also thereafter, thus demonstrating the enduring popularity of wines like Madeira in the UK.
Wine labels with a grape's name on it seem to be rarer.
