The Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival is an annual alternative theater festival held in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 2003 and 2004 it was 12 days long, which made it the longest fringe festival in North America. (The 2005 festival returned to the previous length of 11 days to avoid a conflict with another event.) Founded in 1988 by the Manitoba Theatre Centre, it is one of Winnipeg's most popular cultural events. The 2003 Fringe drew 142,900 attendees. The 2005 festival featured performers from France, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and South Africa as well as performers from across Canada and the US. The executive producer is Nick Kowalchuk, and the festival takes place in various venues throughout Winnipeg's historic Exchange District. {{Hide = {{{Disable Motto Link}}}}} Motto: {{Unhide = {{{Disable Motto link}}}}} Unum Cum Virtute Multorum (One With the Strength of Many) City of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada location. ... 2003(MMIII) is a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. ... 2004(MMIV) is a leap year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar. ... The Winnipeg Fringe is by most reckonings the second-largest North American fringe festival after the Edmonton International Fringe Festival. In 2004 Winnipeg's fringe actually had greater paid attendance than Edmonton (or any other North American fringe festival); however, attendance at the Edmonton festival's free events, and thus its overall attendance, continued to dwarf Winnipeg's. Like its Edmonton counterpart, on which it was largely modelled, but unlike the Edinburgh Fringe, the Winnipeg fringe provides a number of venues for the perfomers, including paid technicians as well as volunteer ticket sellers, ushers and other such functionaries. It is also possible - and increasingly popular - for perfomers to "bring their own venue" by making arrangements with a potential venue other than the ones the festival provides, a process much more similar to that of the Edinburgh fringe.
