Sir Winston Joseph Field (19041969) founded the Rhodesian Front Party with Ian Smith. Winston Field was Rhodesian Prime Minister from 1962 until 1964. He proved inept in dealing with Rhodesia's complex problems involving independence for the British self governing colony. He was replaced in 1964 by Ian Smith.
Field was born and brought up in Bromsgrove in the United Kingdom, and moved to Southern Rhodesia in 1921.
The "imperious and intolerant" (Godwin and Hancock, 1993) Field was elected as Rhodesia's first Rhodesian Front Prime Minister in the 1962 general election and served until he was replaced by Ian Smith in 1964.
Many in the RF felt that Field did not fight hard enough for independence, and he was replaced as leader by Smith in April 1964.
Winston Churchill was a descendant of the first famous member of the Churchill family, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.
Winston's politician father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was the third son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough; Winston's mother was Lady Randolph Churchill (née Jennie Jerome), daughter of American millionaire Leonard Jerome.
Winston Churchill was an early supporter of the pan-Europeanism that eventually led to the formation of the European Common Market and later the European Union (for which one of the three main buildings of the European Parliament is named in his honour).
