Winterhaven is a census-designated place located in Imperial County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 529.


Geography

Winterhaven is located at 32°44'24" North, 114°38'5" West (32.740055, -114.634696)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 529 people, 183 households, and 118 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 851.0/km˛ (2,203.9/mi˛). There are 219 housing units at an average density of 352.3/km˛ (912.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 45.56% White, 3.02% Black or African American, 6.81% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 38.37% from other races, and 5.86% from two or more races. 56.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 183 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 32.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.72.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 35.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 21.2% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.5 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $11,563, and the median income for a family is $16,417. Males have a median income of $26,458 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $7,220. 47.1% of the population and 41.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 60.4% of those under the age of 18 and 13.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
