Life

Current residents of Wintersville, Ohio enjoy the scenic neighborhoods, friendly people, and small-town atmosphere. Popular hangouts are the Jefferson Country Airport, The Center of Music and Art, Zalenski's restaurant, Wendy's, the Starkdale Presbyterian Church, King's Restaurant, and the Treasure Island Flea Market. High schoolers and graduates now in their early twenties sometimes frequent Cross Creek Park to take advantage of the excellent swing set and basketball courts, as well as hold annual "caveman cookouts" by city tradition.

The town's main route is a four-lane extension of Sunset Boulevard in Steubenville, Ohio which begins at an intersection with Ohio State Route 7 and continues westward. The road reduces to two lanes of Wintersville and merges with U.S. Route 22. The road is dominated by small businesses, fast food restaurants, grocery and drug stores, banks, and other typical business establishments as one might expect to find. Some more unusual establishments include Custom Hobbies and Rocky Road Gym, both providing excellent services.

Although limited statistical information is available, some who live in Wintersville commute to Pittsburgh. The Weirton-Steubenville metropolitan area advertises itself as a suburb of Pittsburgh with a lower cost of living, safer neighborhoods and schools, and an atmosphere of small-town tranquility with major city conveniences.

As a result, each weekday evening at approximately 6PM, the road from Sunset Boulevard in Steubenville to Main Street in Wintersville becomes quite concentrated with traffic. This temporary flux in traffic concentration is probably a result of the life of working in Pittsburgh but living in the suburbs of Steubenville and Wintersville. Agressive policing of roads at this time also contribute to unnecessary and sometimes dangerous delays in traffic.

The town belongs to Indian Creek school district, along with Mingo Junction, Bloomingdale, and surrounding rural areas. The district consistently receives the state's highest ratings for education. Indian Creek High School plays a large part in the community life of Wintersville, especially during football season. Annual plays, concerts, and many service projects involve the general population in student life.

A generally uneventful town, Wintersville is wanting of more community areas. Few public facilities exist and the town has no proper swimming pool, tennis courts, or haunted houses to speak of. The town youth have few recreational options and many businesses complain about "hanging out" as unwarranted loitering. There is some movement to pressure city council toward making improvements, but little progress has been shown for decades.

Notable Persons

John Minor - Although an official resident of Steubenville, Ohio, John Minor has sworn loyalty to Wintersville. While he serves many community functions, Indian Creek High School writes his paychecks for services as a multi-honored history instructor. Now in his sixth decade, Minor has led an illustrious life. At various times he held the posts of Kent State quarterback, head of the high school history department, AA moderator, white water rafting enthusiast, and global traveller. The Bearded One, as his neighbors know him on a foggy dawn, splits his time between the Ohio Valley and Western Europe. There he sometimes lectures and gives tours at important sites related to World War II. He can be found cruising the Autobahn or Route 22 at speeds in excess of 200 kph.

The Can Man - None embody the work ethic of Wintersville more than Can Man. First referenced in a 1974 police report for trespassing, TCM has prowled Main Street/Frank P. Layman Boulevard for decades. His name derives from his habit of collecting cans and other recyclables, using the cash generated to finance a small sugar cane venture and other projects. A part time gardener and lawn maintenance enthusiast, TCM is on record saying, "DiGregory's Greenhouse has better grass seed than Big Lots." Just say hi, don't judge.

Ryan McGlone - A true outdoorsman, Ryan is best known for his all-season wardrobe of woodland patterned pants, green or blue smock with matching scarf, and a Churchill beard. He also enjoys the distinction of Wintersville's official mascot, The Fighting Teapot, for his reputation as being short and stout. He crafted his burly frame after years of back breaking labor on the Wintersville Street Team, splitting wood, and raising cat fish. He is expected to live until 2046.

Cheryl - Cheryl (as listed in the white pages) is Wintersville's most successful entrepreneur. Owner of the trucker favorite Cheryl's Diner, her multi-thousand dollar establishment sits atop a hill. Serving breakfast and frozen treats with a smile, Cheryl supports her twin children and believe in the American dream.

Controversy

In the summer of 2006, enterprising individuals exploited a loophole in Ohio's gambling laws to establish "skilled gaming" parlors in Wintersville. Though the game units are similar to slot machines, the player stops the electronic reels rather than the machine. Owners and patrons argue this method of play eliminates chance, and therefore gambling, from the activity. Citizens have grudgingly accepted the parlors as benign entertainment thus far, but no one knows how long that patience will hold. In the meantime, managers placate their patrons with complimentary snacks, drinks, and T-shirts.
