Winton is a town and Local Government Area in central west Queensland, Australia, located 177 kilometres northwest of Longreach. Shire population at the 2001 Census was 1616. One of the founding towns of the Australian airline, Qantas. Main industries of the area are sheep and cattle. Winton is intimately involved in the story of the popular Australian folk song, Waltzing Matilda, which had its first performance in the North Gregory Hotel in the town. The song was written locally on a property beside the famous billabong. Winton's principle claim to fame is that an incident at the nearby Combo Waterhole at Dagworth Station is said to be the stimulus behind the uniquely Australian anthem 'Waltzing Matilda'.
Winton was also the location of the first office for Qantas and to commerate this there is a model of their first plane, an AVRO 504K and a presentation on the early days of the airline.
Winton is one of Queensland biggest cattle trucking depots and frequented by many of the huge 3-5 trailer Road trains which ply the outback roads.
