We are a grassroots organization of people from both North and South Carolina who are convinced that the preservation of our Winyah rivers and their watersheds would best be served by hiring advocates to guard these waters from further harm.
Our mission is to protect, preserve, monitor and revitalize the health of the lands and waters of the greater Winyah Bay watershed, focusing on local activism through the Waccamaw Riverkeeper® program.
The Winyah Rivers Foundation is most fortunate to have four well-known and respected scientists who are intimately familiar with the Waccamaw River.
Winyah Bay Focus Area (426 words)
The lower watershed, lazy with the slow, shallow, swampy marshes of the South, sustains 123,000 acres of forested wetlands and 23,000 acres of tidal freshwater marshes.
The region’s natural and historic assets, from its bays and salt marshes to the freshwater marshes of its former rice plantations, are drawing an increasing number of tourists, photographers, anglers, hunters, and naturalists.
The Winyah Bay Focus Area Task Force, a coalition of public and private organizations, was founded in 1992 under the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan to seek landscape-level solutions to the watershed’s problems.
