Song information

"With You" was written by Simpson, billymann, and Andy Marvel, and produced by Andy Marvel and billyman. Simpson having co-writing credit on "With You" marked the first time that she had received writing credit on any of her singles. In this earthy girl-power anthem dedicated to being yourself, Jessica recalls how when she's with the one she loves, she doesn't need to put up a front. "With him", she can let her hair down low, or say anything crazy, yet she knows he'll always catch her if she falls, and he even makes her feel beautiful even if she's got nothing but a T-Shirt on. billy mann (real name: William Hort Mann born Erlichman) was originally a singer/songwriter, now record producer/songwriter and entrepreneur who started his career living in a car and playing in dive bars. ... Along with Newlyweds, the single helped to turn around Simpson's fledgling recording career (Due to her previous flop singles, and underwhelming album sales, Columbia Records considered dropping her until "With You" became a smash). It is often considered to be her signature song. Music video

As the single was released while Miss Simpson's reality show, Newlyweds was still on air and at the peak of its popularity, the video of the song was created to parallel the show. The video (which apparently takes place at Jessica's mansion) starts off with Miss Simpson washing the dishes and the kitchen floor in an awkward manner. (This is the video's first reference to Newlyweds, as Simpson complained on the show about housecleaning, as she never done it in her life before being married). In the midst of washing the dishes, Simpson is seen with a shirt that says "Plata-Ma-Pus". (She gained infamy when she became confused over the proununciation of platypus as "plata-poos" or "plata-ma-pus" on the show.) The video then shifts into the second verse showing a picture of Jessica with her husband, Nick Lachey (to remind watchers who the "you" in "With You" refers to). In another joke to Newlyweds, Miss Simpson can be seen on the couch eating Chicken Of The Sea tuna. (She gained infamy on the show when she became confused over what she was eating; she had realized that she was eating tuna, but thought it may have been chicken due to the tuna's trademark.) Nicholas Scott Lachey (born November 9, 1973, in Harlan, Kentucky) is an American pop-music singer who rose to fame in the mid-1990s as a writer and joint lead-vocalist along with founding member Jeff Timmons of the boy-band, 98 Degrees. ... The scene soon shifts to yet another reference to the show as Jessica attempts to do dirty laundry (In the show, Miss Simpson showed that she was inept at doing laundry, and at one point gave up, insisting on hiring a housekeeper). The video then launches into arguably the most infamous joke made from Newlyweds: Simpson can be seen over a clean kitchen floor munching on buffalo wings. (In the show, Miss Simpson became confused over the usage of "buffalo" in buffalo wings, and thought that they contained real buffalo meat.) The video finally ends with the last reference to Newlyweds by showing Jessica attempting to golf. (In the show, Miss Simpson claimed that she could not golf well because her huge breasts get in the way). Due to the video's cross appeal to fans of Newlyweds, the video of the song was released as a DVD single. Chart success

"With You" was released largely in hopes that the song would revive In This Skin on the charts; luckily for Simpson, the track completed its task well. The single became her biggest hit since 1999's "I Wanna Love You Forever", as it peaked within the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100. The song became her first #1 hit on the Top 40 Mainstream chart and also made the top five of the Top 40 Tracks. Strong digital downloads would later assure the single a Platinum certification, which it achieved in November 2005 (having previously gone gold in October 2004). However, the song's strong downloads were not able to help it on the charts, as downloads were not counted towards The Billboard Hot 100 until February 2005.
