All told, Withnail drinks rougly 9 1/2 glasses of red wine, 1 pint of cider, 1 shot of lighter fluid, 2 1/2 shots of gin, 6 glasses of sherry, 13 whiskeys and 1/2 a pint of ale. Seeing as the whiskey alone would be more than enough to nessecitate a trip to hospital for most people, it is only the most hardened fans of Withnail & I who can keep pace for the entire film.
Withnail and I is a character piece and while still achingly funny, it still pulls out and forks you with that cattle prod of recognition.
Withnail goes back to the flat in Camden, pours a fine red down two shotgun barrels, drinks and blows his head off.
Grant nails Withnail with a breathless and overwhelming arrogance and a gentle talent that surfaces with affecting concern twice in the movie – the two times he acknowledges the end of his lifestyle.
Where an amount such as 'one finger' or 'two fingers' is mentioned, this means the drinker must drink, imbibe or consume a quantity of drink such that the amount in their glass/bottle/can/etc decreases by one finger or two fingers width's as seen from the side.
Here we have used to terminology 'downing' a drink to refer to somebody finishing what is left of their drink in one go.
When someone has to 'down' their drink, you could either let them finish what happens to be in their glass at that time, thus allowing luck to play a part, or the more malicious could insist upon re-filling the glass before the punishment is carried out.
