The airline was established in September 2003 and in December 2003 was funded by private individuals (Indigo Partners). It started operations on 19 May 2004, 19 days after Poland and Hungary entered the European Union and the single European aviation market. Wizz Air has in its short history cancelled a lot of flights including Katowice – Gdańsk, Warszawa – Barcelona, Katowice – Budapest, Katowice – Berlin, Katowice – Malmö, Katowice - Amsterdam, Kaunas – Malmö (cancelled before it started operating). The airline just also recently (Spring 2006) reduced capacity on several routes, including Warsaw – Paris/Beauvais, Warsaw – Stockholm/Skavsta, Warsaw – Kaunas, Katowice – Dortmund, Budapest - Paris/Beauvais, Budapest – Amsterdam, Budapest - Warsaw, Budapest - Stockholm/Skavsta, Budapest – Brussels/Charleroi, Warsaw - Brussels/Charleroi, Budapest – Frankfurt/Hahn, many of them left with only 3 weekly flights, even on prime markets like Paris or Amsterdam. (This is from a SkyEurope press release.) Wizz Air is apparently in talks with Prestwick Airport for services to Katowice and Budapest, also considering opening its first western european base. The airline also offers charter services. Groups can have charter flights to any airport in Europe.
Fleet The Wizzair fleet consists of 9 Airbus A320-200 aircraft (at October 2005). It has committed to one further Airbus A320 lease and has firm orders for twelve Airbus A319/Airbus A320s [1]. The airline intends to operate 25-30 aircraft in 3-5 years. The fleet is easily recognisable in airports due to its white, pink and purple colors. Pricing Wizzair is a low-cost airline with regular free flights offers. Passengers do though need to pay taxes and charges which can include a fuel surcharge, insurance and facility charge, air duty charge, passenger service charge, and security tax. These additional taxes and charges can equate to as much as 55euros one-way. There is an additional 5 euro charge for ordering via the web using a credit card and an 11 euro charge for ordering over the phone.
