Wolcott is a village located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,712.


The Village of Wolcott is in the southwest part of the Town of Wolcott. Routes 89, 155, 160, 163, and 261 converge on the village.


Geography

Wolcott Creek flows northward through the village and empties into Port Bay, an arm of Lake Ontario.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.1 km˛ (2.0 mi˛). 5.1 km˛ (2.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,712 people, 715 households, and 421 families residing in the village. The population density is 339.0/km˛ (878.7/mi˛). There are 768 housing units at an average density of 152.1/km˛ (394.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 94.45% White, 2.57% Black or African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.76% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 4.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 715 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the village the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.7 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $28,056, and the median income for a family is $36,705. Males have a median income of $31,071 versus $23,417 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,577. 18.3% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.0% of those under the age of 18 and 15.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
