Wolfgang Thierse is the current speaker of the Bundestag. He was born on October 22, 1943 in Breslau. He studied at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin. Thierse is seen by Germans as one of the early heroes who helped contribute to the destruction of the wall.
Thierse said he did not agree with demonstrators in Berlin who have recently protested economic cutback proposals, but said he was glad that he had demonstrated once, earning others the right to demonstrate now.
Through an interpreter, Thierse told a gathering Monday of members of Congress, administration officials and research group representatives that he was proud to be the first Bundestag president to visit Washington in 30 years, especially at this "exciting moment" in the presidential race.
WolfgangThierse (hier bei der Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde) ist seit 2004 Ehrendoktor der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Münster.
Nach dem Abitur machte Thierse zunächst eine Lehre zum Schriftsetzer und begann 1964 ein Studium der Germanistik und der Kulturwissenschaften an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin, welches er 1969 beendete.
Von März bis Oktober 1990 gehörte Thierse der ersten frei gewählten Volkskammer der DDR an.
