History

The Hawks are one of only two NBL clubs to have competed in every season since the league's inception in 1979 without relocating to another city (the other being the Brisbane Bullets). The club was originally known as the Illawarra Hawks, the name referring to the Illawarra region rather than specifically its major urban centre Wollongong. The name change took place after the 1998 season; the team also adopted a new logo and moved to the Wollongong Entertainment Centre. Wollongong is the third largest city in the state of New South Wales, Australia, after Sydney and Newcastle.
Wollongong has a high proportion of residents with southern European ancestries, particularly from Macedonia, Italy, Greece, Turkey and former Jugoslavia many of whom migrated to Australia due to acute labour shortages and accelerating industrialisation in the boom period after World War II.
Wollongong has one university, the University of Wollongong, which was formerly part of the University of New South Wales, and the Illawarra Institute of Technology, part of the State's system of TAFE colleges.

The Wollongong Hawks have withstood a late charge from the Perth Wildcats to record a 105-91 victory in their Philips Championship clash at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.
Wollongong import Cortez Groves fired home an amazing eight three-pointers on the way to a game-high 31 points, while skipper Glen Saville was also on target from long-range with five triples, finishing with 26 points and six boards.
Hawks coach Brendan Joyce was impressed with his team's overall performance, but was especially happy with the first-half effort that gave the team the vital edge.
