Wolverine is a village located in Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 359.

The village is in the sparsely populated southwest corner of Cheboygan County, lying mostly within Nunda Township, though a small portion lies in adjacent Wilmot Township. It is on Interstate 75, 19 miles north of Gaylord and 9 miles south of Indian River and about 34 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

Geography

Wolverine is situated on the Sturgeon River where the west branch joins the main branch at 45°16'24" north latitude, 84°36'16" west longitude.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 359 people, 131 households, and 91 families residing in the village. The population density is 155.7/km² (403.5/mi²). There are 158 housing units at an average density of 68.5/km² (177.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.33% White, 0.00% African American, 1.67% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 131 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the village the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $22,813, and the median income for a family is $26,500. Males have a median income of $27,500 versus $17,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $9,612. 20.4% of the population and 14.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
