This is the largest district in terms of land mass, this district includes most of the North East Alberta and borders Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories The main city is Fort McMurray, and Fort Chipewyan in the north, along the north shore of Lake Athabasca.
The district was created in the Alberta electoral boundary re-distribution of 2004 to encompass the entire regional municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Thebacha district in the Northwest Territories borders to the north.
Created in 1995 as an amalgamation of the City of Fort McMurray and Improvement District 143, it now ranks, by area, among the largest municipalities in North America, and is the largest in Canada.
Until the Alberta electoral boundary re-distribution of 2004, the municipality was divided between the provincialelectoraldistricts of Fort McMurray (the community itself) and Athabasca-Wabasca (the surrounding area).
As a result, the new Wood Buffalo electoraldistrict became the most populous such district in Alberta.
