Sauldsberry graduated from Compton Union High School where he was the star of his basketball team and then went on to attend Texas Southern University. In 1957, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors (now the Golden State Warriors). The following year in 1958, Woody was named the league's top rookie, the second African American ever to win the award.
