Woolwich Township is a township located in Gloucester County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 3,032.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 54.9 km˛ (21.2 mi˛). 54.2 km˛ (20.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.13% water.


Woolwich Township borders Logan Township, East Greenwich Township, Harrison Township, South Harrison Township. Swedesboro is an independent municipality located entirely within Woolwich Township.


Woolwich Township also borders Salem County.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,032 people, 959 households, and 838 families residing in the township. The population density is 55.9/km˛ (144.8/mi˛). There are 1,026 housing units at an average density of 18.9/km˛ (49.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 91.13% White, 4.55% African American, 0.00% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.95% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 3.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 959 households out of which 49.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 77.4% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 12.6% are non-families. 8.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.13 and the average family size is 3.35.


In the township the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 38.0% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.6 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $83,790, and the median income for a family is $87,111. Males have a median income of $54,200 versus $38,571 for females. The per capita income for the township is $29,503. 2.9% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 19.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

East Greenwich Township was created by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 10, 1881 from the eastern part of Greenwich Township and the western part of Mantua Township.
