The World Confederation of Labour (WCL) was founded in 1920 under the name of the "International Federation of Christian Trade Unions" as a confederation of unions associated with the Christian Democratic parties of Europe. It went into eclipse in the 1930s, when its affiliates in Germany, Austria and Italy were suppressed, and lost most of its affiliates in Eastern Europe after the end of World War II. LABOUR: World's Big Two Aim At Getting Bigger (715 words)
WCL, the World Confederation of Labour, comprises of 144 autonomous and democratic trade unions from 116 countries around the globe, with more than 26 million members, mainly from Third World countries.
ICFTU, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, represents 148 million workers worldwide and is by far the biggest confederation consisting of 234 affiliated organisations in 152 countries and territories on all five continents.
This is because the two labour confederations have come closer in recent years by launching joint actions on specific issues.
