The league was originally founded by Rome Renegades and Raleigh Rebels owner Harry Pierce. The Rebels were to be renamed as the Carolina Bombers. Daytona Beach Thunder player Javan Camon, in his second year with the club, died February 26, 2007 as a result of injuries received during a game against the Columbus Lions.
