Wuhai (Chinese: 乌海; pinyin: Wūhǎi; literally "Dark Sea") is a small prefecture-level city (since 1976) and regional center in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of People's Republic of China. It is located on the Huang He between the Gobi and Ordos deserts at 39°39′N, 106°41′E. The population in 2001 of the prefecture with an area of 1,754 km², was 427,000. The three districts are Haibowan(199,557 people),Wuda(127,177)and Hainan(100,819). The city's economy is based on coal mining, electric power generation, metal-working and chemical industries, as well as fruit (grapes) and dairy farming. It is Baotou-Lanzhou rail line, and an airport was opened in 2003.
