It is a former gold mining centre known for it alluvial wet mining techniques. The area is now a dairy farming and forestry and has numerous bed and breakfast lodges, which allows its many visitors to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the district's forest and mountains. It is affectionately known as 'Yack'. The commercial centre of the town, known as the Yackandandah Conservation Area, is recorded on the Register of the National Estate. Gold mining consists of the processes and techniques employed in the removal of gold from the ground. ... A railway once linked Yackandandah to Beechworth which opened in 1891. The route to Woorragee and from there to Yackandandah was steep. Trains descending the last gradient into Yackandandah would halt,(near the now Yackandandah turnoff, from the Beechworth-Wodonga Road) the guard would apply hand-brakes to carriages and wagons. The last train on the Yackandandah-Beechworth line was in July 1954. Yackandandah is a rather special and very attractive historic village situated in a valley amidst a series of substantial hills.
James Osborne took up the Yackandandah No.1 station, Elizabeth Mitchell established the Yackandandah Lower run, and George Kinchington and his wife came overland from Sydney, crossed the Murray River and camped on Yackandandah Creek, near its junction with the Kiewa River (east of the townsite).
However, gold was discovered at the confluence of Yackandandah Creek and Commissioners Creek in December 1852 and a rush got under way along the creekside in 1853 with the population increasing from 150 in 1853 to 3000 by 1862.
