The name Yala is actually the Thai corruption of Jala, its original Malay name means 'net'. The province is also known as Jolor in Patani Malay language. Demographics

Yala is one of the four provinces of Thailand where the majority of the population are Muslim, making up 68.9% of the population. Also 66.1% of the population are Malay. They speak the Patani Malay language. The Yala Malays are very similar in ethnicity and culture to the Malays of Kelantan, Malaysia.
