Every fall semester, a number of Yale undergraduates who wish to learn how to play the Harkness Tower carillon can audition for a place in the Guild of Carilloneurs. After attending an introductory meeting, these students receive keys to the Tower practice room and basic instruction on how to play the carillon. For a month or so, they have access to the practice carillon (whose small bells are not audible outside the tower)in order to prepare an audition piece, which is performed for Guild judges. If the audition is successful, one is admitted to the Guild and allowed--after further practice--to perform on the main Harkness Tower carillon.
Yale's 70 undergraduate majors are primarily focused on a liberal curriculum, and few of the undergraduate departments are pre-professional in nature.
