Yates is a town located in Orleans County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,510. The town in named after Joseph C. Yates, a governor of New York.


The Town of Yates was incorporated in 1822 from part of the Town of Ridgeway and was briefly called Northton. Yates is in the northwest part of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.0 km˛ (37.5 mi˛). 97.0 km˛ (37.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


The northern part of the Town of Yates borders Lake Ontario.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,510 people, 917 households, and 669 families residing in the town. The population density is 25.9/km˛ (67.0/mi˛). There are 1,268 housing units at an average density of 13.1/km˛ (33.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.13% White, 0.80% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 917 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.19.


In the town the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $39,803, and the median income for a family is $42,165. Males have a median income of $32,586 versus $20,224 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,839. 8.3% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Ashwood -- Located on the border with the Town of Carlton.
  • Lyndonville - The Village of Lyndonville is in the center of the town.
  • Shadigee -- a Lake Ontario shore community, where Route 63 ends.
  • Yates Center -- formerly Northton, located on Route 63 north of Lyndonville.
