History The Romans called it Iamnia. After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai moved the Sanhedrin to Yavne. The infrastructure developed here enabled the continued existence of the Jewish people for nearly 2000 years.
