Year Zero is an alternate reality game based on the Nine Inch Nails concept album of the same name, its expected follow-up, and a possible accompanying movie project.[1] Although the album is to be released on April 16, 2007 in Europe, and the following day worldwide,[2] the game has been underway since roughly February 12, 2007 and is expected to continue for another three years.[3] The game was created by 42 Entertainment, the same group responsible for the Halo 2 promotional alternative reality game I Love Bees.[4][5] Alternate Reality, see Alternate Reality (computer game). ...

Although it could be argued that the Year Zero game is merely a form of promotion for the Nine Inch Nails album,[6] frontman Trent Reznor has stated that "The term 'marketing' sure is a frustrating one for me at the moment. What you are now starting to experience IS 'year zero'. It's not some kind of gimmick to get you to buy a record - it IS the art form... and we're just getting started. Hope you enjoy the ride."[7] Reznor has also called the Year Zero game "a new entertainment form."[4] Michael Trent Reznor (born May 17, 1965) is an American musician, singer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and a modern day Renaissance man. ...
Premise Reznor said that Year Zero is a concept album,[8] "could be about the end of the world," and marked a "shift in direction" in that it "doesn't sound like With Teeth."[7] The 2006 tour merchandise designs featured overt references to the United States military, which "reflects future directions."[7] This article or section does not adequately cite its references or sources. ...

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Campaign timeline The following is a basic, real-world timeline of the major events, releases, and dates of the Year Zero game: - February 12, 2007 – Fans found that a new Nine Inch Nails tour T-shirt contained highlighted letters that spell out the words "I am trying to believe."[9] It was discovered that iamtryingtobelieve.com was registered as a website, and soon several related websites were found in the IP range (http://anotherversionofthetruth.com, http://bethehammer.net, http://105thairbornecrusaders.com, and http://churchofplano.com), all describing a dystopian vision of the world fifteen years in the future.[10]
http://consolidatedmailsystems.com found through reference on the Another Version of the Truth forums.[10] Also on February 12, a USB drive was found in a bathroom stall during a Nine Inch Nails concert in Lisbon, Portugal. It contained a high-quality MP3 of the track "My Violent Heart," which quickly circulated the Internet.[11][12] This was initially thought by many to be an accidental leak of the song, but further releases in a similar fashion confirmed these to be intentional "leaks" and as part of the overall alternate reality game. On the end of the MP3 was a few seconds of static, which, when analyzed under a spectrogram reveals an image of The Presence. The same static is on the album at the end of Track #9, "The Warning."

The "Art is Resistance" logo. This lithograph led to The Mailtrsom (see highest resolution possible, in the upper left corner). - February 19, 2007 – A USB drive was found at a concert in Barcelona, Spain, containing two audio files: the track "Me, I'm Not" and an MP3 of static. The mp3 of static, "2432.mp3, "when put through a spectrogram, revealed the phone number 1-216-333-1810, which in turn revealed http://www.uswiretap.com/case_number_required/.[13]
- February 22, 2007 – A teaser trailer was released though the Year Zero website and featured a quick glimpse of a blue road sign that says "I AM TRYING TO BELIEVE" and a distorted glimpse of The Presence.[14] Additionally, one frame in the teaser points to the url http://yearzero.nin.com/0024, which presented an image named "yearzero_cover.jpg," which was later confirmed to be the album cover.
Red fliers are handed out at a concert in Paris, France with the words "Art is Resistance," leading to http://artisresistance.com.[citation needed] - February 25, 2007 – A third USB drive was found at a concert in Manchester, England. It contained two files: the track "In This Twilight" and an image of the Hollywood Sign apparently demolished. The picture led fans to a website called http://www.hollywoodinmemoriam.org.[15]
- March 7, 2007 – The music video for the first single from Year Zero, "Survivalism," was released via USB pen drives at a concert in Carling Academy Brixton in London, England. These drives contained low and high resolution versions of the video, which were quickly dispersed onto the internet and eventually officially on the Year-Zero mini-site. The numerous displays within the music video all display time code, which fans discovered contained letters leading to http://www.thewaterturnedtoblood.net.[16] The video also led to the discovery of http://www.judsonogram.net, which in turn makes a mention to Cedocore, leading to http://www.cedocore.com.[citation needed]
- March 11, 2007 – Fliers were handed out at a Nine Inch Nails show in London, which had directions to a local bridge, which underneath housed a billboard with the words "Operation Swamp 0000," pointing to the website http://www.operationswamp0000.net, which in turn directs users to http://www.operationchipsweep.net.[17]
During a listening party, lithographs were handed out to people who had pre-ordered the album.[18][19] These lithographs had the words "The Mailstrom" written across them, leading fans to http://www.themailstrom.com. http://www.thepriceoftreason.net and http://www.opensourceresistance.net found as per a cryptic e-mail randomly sent to many Nine Inch Nails fans.[4][20] - April 4, 2007 – Year Zero album is made available for streaming play on the official Year Zero mini-site.[21]
A computerized voice on Track #13, "The Great Destroyer," when the left and right stereo channels are combined into a single mono signal, vocalizes the words "red horse vector," leading to http://www.redhorsevector.net/.[citation needed] Morse code in Track #14, "Another Version of the Truth," is discovered to spell out "grace the teacher," pointing towards http://www.gracetheteacher.net.[citation needed] - April 13, 2007 – Art is Resistance "meeting" scheduled in Los Angeles, California, posted on Open Source Resistance. [2] Participants are asked to "Wear something that shows you’re one of us." Art is Resistance kits are handed out to those attending, consisting of Art is Resistance buttons, posters, stencils, and in some cases, cell phones on which participants would receive in-game phone calls and become a part of the game.[23]
- April 16, 17, and 18, 2007 – Year Zero album is set to be released in Europe, the United States, and Japan respectively.[2][24]

Fictional drugs and bodily augmentations - Parepin
- A psychotropic drug released into American water supplies, purported to reduce the risk of bioterrorism by bolstering the immune system. However, the creator of I am Trying to Believe claims to have debunked these myths as a conspiracy; parepin is actually a sedative, known to affect serotonin and dopamine levels. The drug is also known to reduce the sex drive of anyone who has ingested the drug, cause facial ticks and constipation, as well as subduing resistance to authority. Some people under the influence of the drug are known to have had hypnagogic hallucinations, particularly that of The Presence.
- Opal (Hycephamitamyη)
- A new drug, supposedly "the new crack," as it is cheaper to distribute and more widely available. Dispensed in a small, pressurized glass tube with a syringe on one end, the drug, which appears as a black liquid, is dropped or injected directly into the eyes, or absorbed through the skin in powdered form with the aid of a solvent. While initially developed as a hallucinogenic sedative, it has become popular as a recreational drug, with users often experiencing an intense, often religious, state of mind. At least one website notes a correlation between Opal use and sightings of The Presence.
- In a top-secret internal memo from Cedocore found here, Opal is revealed to be a product of Cedocore, via a subsidiary company by the name of "Wantzen-Tabard-Boutier," being distributed through organized crime.
- Blue pills
- Referenced in Be the Hammer [3]. Nicknamed "die-agra," these pills are given to soldiers to reintroduce the aggression lost by taking Parepin. They are said to "keep you frosty and get your soldier on."
- Red pills
- Also referenced in Be the Hammer [4]. Nicknamed "blisters," "bloody mary," and "jerk," these pills seem to be a more extreme version of the Blue pills, given to only the best soldiers. They are said to "erase the line between killing and fucking. Some of the damage is permanent." Apparently, soldiers are not allowed to see their families after taking the Red pills, but are told this after the fact.
An implanted Nerochip, as shown on Operation Swamp 0000. - Nerochip
- The nerochip is a tiny red device, implanted in the right wrist of all convicts of violent crimes, which traces the whereabouts of the person who carries it. They are also required for certain privileges among the general public, such as being able to drive. They are also known to come in different forms aside from implants. For example, earrings containing the device have become popular among celebrities and the public.
- Red Horse virus
- Primarily described in Red Horse Vector, the Red Horse virus is a "hardy" biological agent "presenting many of the same symptoms of the Ebola virus without the attending fragility one would expect of [Ebola]." A video on Red Horse Vector shows the effects of the Red Horse virus on Jed Mather, a U.S. diplomat kidnapped and killed by Algerian terrorists. Additionally, a wiretapped conversation on 1-216-333-1810 describes an attack of an underground nightclub dubbed the "Star Chamber," where the characteristic symptom of "sweating blood" is described.

In-game websites The story of Year-Zero is primarily told through the Year Zero album and a number of fictitious, in-game websites. These numerous sites all have a very distinctive, "hacked" or "corrupted" appearance to them, with the exception of the Open Source Resistance site. They were registered through a company that protects site owners' identities.[25] Domains by Proxy, Presented is a list of the most relevant websites, in the rough chronological order in which they were discovered.
The first website discovered, I am Trying to Believe is primarily concerned with the fictional drug Parepin as well as its relationship to sightings of The Presence. On one of the pages, an email is provided as contact information to the "creator" of the website (water@iamtryingtobelieve.com), and upon sending an email to this address, an auto-reply is returned:[10] Auto-reply from water@iamtryingtobelieve.com wrote: ------------------------AUTO_RESPONSE--------------_-- Thank you for your interest. Calling this number returns a wiretapped phone conversation which is described from a different perspective at U.S. Wiretap.com (Case No. - 71839J).[29] It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with periodogram. ...
1-310-295-1040 A Nine Inch Nails tour T-shirt contained highlighted letters that spelled out another phone number: 1-310-295-1040.[30] Calling this number plays a series of clips, including a clip of the album's first single "Survivalism."[4]
1-866-445-6580 Another phone number appears on the digipak version Year Zero. On the back is a piece of paper with the UPC, copyright information and a label from the fictional US Bureau of Morality with the phone number 1-866-445-6580. This leads to an official recording from the Bureau.[31]
In-game timeline The following is a fictional account of the Year Zero scenario, as described by Year Zero websites, the album, and other sources. Presented are dates in both AD and BA ("Born again," a fictional, in-game epoch, with year 0 occurring in 2022 AD). Many of the dates and specifics are incomplete or vague, given the nature of their fictional documentation. Dionysius Exiguus invented Anno Domini years to date Easter. ...

Historical in-game events Although the fictional timeline of Year Zero begins in 2007 (-15 BA), a number of actual historical events are also considered continuous with the storyline, according to in-game timelines such as the one on Another Version of the Truth (pictured to the right): - August 1990 (-32 BA) - March 1991 (-31 BA) – In response to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi forces, the United States and its allies attack Iraq in the first Gulf War. Afterwards, many combatants report illness, supposedly as a result of their service (commonly referred to as the Gulf War syndrome).
- April - July 1994 (-28 BA) – Approximately 1 million Africans die in the Rwandan Genocide. The genocide is largely ignored by the international community, while the Yugoslav wars garnered considerable international attention, including NATO intervention.
- September 11, 2001 (-21 BA) – Terrorism strikes the United States in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The attacks are largely politicized by American politicians.
- October 2001 (-21 BA) – The United States and its allies invade Afghanistan in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11.
- March 2003 (-19 BA) – The United States and its allies invade Iraq, as a part of its continuing War on Terrorism. The war is largely criticized for the its lack of pretense or direct connection to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
- January 2005 (-17 BA) – Oil company profits continue to increase, despite economic decline in the United States. ExxonMobil becomes the first company in history to break the $10 billion mark in quarterly earnings. Meanwhile, the political administrations of the time refuse to sign the Kyoto Protocol and seems to ignore evidence of global warming.

Numbers So far in the Year Zero game, every piece of media has had a series of numbers hidden within it. The format of the numbers is "24.x.y," where it is believed 24 represents the Halo number of Year Zero, x is a number between 1 and 20, and y is a number between 1 and 8.[citation needed] The relevance of these numbers is so far unknown, though it may merely be a form of cataloging the media within the game, in much the same manner as each Nine Inch Nails release is given a "Halo" number. Below is an impartial list of the numbers discovered: Year Zero (also known as Halo 24)[2] is the title of a Nine Inch Nails studio album to be released on April 16, 2007 in Europe, the following day in the United States, and April 25, 2007 in Japan. ...
