The history of this division possibly dates back to 1924, when A.J. Harrell of Oklahoma City, founded the Yellow Cab Transit Company. The original company was founded as a bus and taxi company. Then in 1929, A.J. Harrell, with the help of the E.I. Dupont Company, wanted to improve highway safety by determining what vehicle color would be the most visible on the nations highway. After the review was completed, it was determined that Swamp Holly Orange was the most visible color, and today the color is still utilized on all company tractors.

The company remained small until 1952, when an ownership group led by George E. Powell, Sr. purchased the company. It was after this that Yellow helped pioneer the concept of consolidating small freight shipments into trailer loads.

In 1968, the company name was changed from Yellow Transit Freight Lines to Yellow Freight Systems. During the deregulation of interstate trucking in the 1980’s, Yellow Freight Systems embarked on a massive restructuring by creating new distribution centers across the country to better serve the customer. Then in 1992, Yellow Freight Systems again changed its name with the parent company creation, Yellow Corporation, requiring Yellow Freight Systems to be changed to Yellow Transportation, Inc.
