He was born on 20 October 1897 at Duksoo Palace in Seoul as seventh son of Emperor Gwang-mu (光武帝 광무제 gwang moo je) of Korea and his wife Queen Imperial Sun-heon. He was also younger brother by a different mother of Emperor Yung-hui (隆熙帝 융희제 yoong hee je) and Prince Gang.
