From 1960 to 1972, the city suffered health problems caused by pollution of SOx being dumped into the atmosphere from oil chemical plants.
In Japan, a disease called Yokkaichi zensoku (a type of asthma) is named after the city, and it is considered one of the four major diseases that come from industrial pollution.
