Yonaguni (与那国町; -chou) is a town located in Yaeyama district, Okinawa, Japan.
As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 1,822 and the density of 63.09 persons per km². The total area is 28.88 km².
Yonaguni is also the name of the westernmost island of Japan, with three main towns, Yonaguni, Sonai, and Kubura.
It is also home to two mysterious Ryukyuan writing systems, "Kaida-di" (also used on Ishigaki Island where it is called "Kaida-zi") and "Daahan" (also used on Ishigaki Island where it is called "Yaahan").
Okinawa's capital, Naha, is located in the southern part of the largest and most populous island, Okinawa Honto, which is approximately half-way between Kyūshū and Taiwan.
Okinawa's location in the East China Sea, and relatively close proximity to Japan, Korea, China and South East Asia allowed the Ryūkyū Kingdom to become a prosperous trading nation.
Okinawa is a major producer of sugar cane, pineapples, papayas and other tropical fruits.
