The film follows the exploits of Joe (played by McGregor), a young drifter who has ended up working on one of Glasgow's river barges. It deals with lust and sin, as we see Joe move from one brief affair to the next as he tries to get away from a guilty secret.
Young Adam garnered controversy because of its graphic sexual content, including a close-up shot of Ewan McGregor's penis; some critics felt the director used the scene for pure shock-value rather than artistic merit.
"YoungAdam" was filmed in summer, and the tree-lined banks of the Clyde have an effulgent green glow that almost offsets the gray industrial skies.
"YoungAdam" unfolds with an absolute minimum of dramatic highs and lows, and it's so disaffected that it prompts laughter at the wrong moments (usually when Joe is having his way with another bored conquest).
"YoungAdam" -- the title is unexplained and most likely biblical -- follows a young man aching for knowledge and heading for a fall, and it's present at the horrible moment when he arrives at both.
