The Ypresian is the first stage of the Eocene Epoch. It spans the time between 55.8 ± 0.2 Ma and 48.6 ± 0.2 Ma (million years ago). The stage is named after Ypres, Belgium. The famous Messel shales in Germany are from this age. Faunal stages are a subdivision of geologic time used primarily by paleontologists who study fossils rather than by geologists who study rock formations. ... In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the Ypresian stage (formerly known as the early or Lower Eocene) is represented by approximately 100 metres of sands and clays, collectively known as the Thames Group.
The Ypresian stage is present in the sea cliff at Whitecliff and Alum Bays and underlies the northern part of the Isle of Wight.
The fossil fauna of the Ypresian stage is dominated by invertebrates, particularly molluscs.
